A 2.5 tonne load limit is now in effect on Barrington Tops Forest Road, approximately 7.5km from the Moonan Brook Road turnoff, following a geotechnical assessment of a recent landslip caused by heavy rain in May 2025.

What happened?

A 30-metre section of the road has been compromised due to a slope failure on the downslope side.

What is Council doing?

Council has engaged geotechnical experts to undertake landslip investigation and recommend appropriate remediation measures. Meanwhile, Council is also working with key stakeholders (Transport for NSW and NSW Reconstruction Authority) to undertake emergency repairs on damaged sections of the road. These works, along with long-term solutions, will be included in Council’s flood recovery claims and will be delivered subject to grant funding approval.

What should road users be aware of?

Based on the initial geotechnical assessment, engineers have recommended imposing a 2.5-tonne gross vehicle limit on this section of road to preserve slope stability during dry conditions. More detailed investigations and permanent repairs are being planned to ensure long-term safety of the road. Access may be varied as circumstances change. This may result in further limits being placed and confining access to emergency vehicles only. Please take caution in driving under general wet weather conditions.

Not sure what your vehicle weighs?

You can check your vehicle’s tare weight and gross vehicle mass using the Service NSW Rego Check. Just remember this won’t include any modifications or extra load you’ve added: https://check-registration.service.nsw.gov.au

Thanks for your cooperation as we work to keep this important road safe.
