Young Leaders Emerge in Shire's Essay and Postcard Contests

During the recent Council Meeting, winners of the "Mayor for a Day" Essay Competition and the Postcard Competition themed "A Special Place in My Community" were announced. These competitions drew over 700 submissions in total from school students across the Shire, reflecting a strong interest in local government.

In the Essay Competition, students shared their thoughts on "If I was Mayor for a day, I would...". The Postcard Competition saw students creatively depicting what makes their community unique. Here are the winners:

Postcard Competition Winners:

  • Carter Robinson - Blandford Public School
  • Sienna Hayne - Ellerston Public School
  • Charlie Wright - Murrurundi Public School
  • Alice Googe - Scone Grammar School
  • Lucy McCosker - Scone Public School
  • Paddy Armstrong - St Joseph's Primary School Merriwa
  • Myah Clydsdale - St Mary's Primary School Scone

Among the Essay Competition winners, Bella Watson and Stella Waddington stood out and were honoured as Deputy Mayor for a Day 2023 and Mayor for a Day 2023, respectively. They joined Mayor Maurice Collison during the Council meeting and helped in reading some agenda items, showcasing a glimpse of young leadership within the community.
