‘We LIVE Here’ is one of the most successful ‘buy local’ programs delivered through Why Leave Town who produce the cards for over 80 communities. Offered by over 200 businesses across Muswellbrook, Denman, Scone, Merriwa, Murrurundi, Aberdeen (and our smaller villages) make sure you sign your business up to accept the card. We’ll send someone over to get you started, complete with a promotional kit and EFTPOS activation. Unfortunately Apple readers are unable to read the cards, so you must have an EFTPOS machine to participate.
Originally funded through the Federal Governments Drought Communities Programme, the card was initiated in 2018 as a direct response to the drought crisis that was impacting on our local communities. Farmers are a traditionally tough demographic but this drought was unprecedented and the cards were a practical way to provide support by giving people autonomy in what they purchased. They also alleviated the need to process and store donated goods which had become a major headache. Best of all – the money stayed local.
The image of a country road with promising rain clouds became one of hope, and the word ‘LIVE’ was a message to our farmers. The program won the prestigious Local Government Award for Excellence in Communication in 2019.
In August 2022 the card hit a major milestone, reaching $1 million in funds loaded. One of the major factors in the cards success is the ongoing support by local employers, including many mining companies operating within the Muswellbrook Shire. The cards are regularly used in employee ‘thank you’ programs with a high turnover each Christmas in particular. Not only does this support keep investment in the Muswellbrook and Upper Hunter Shires, it ensures there is no stigma to the card which could have been a birthday gift, employer thank you or provided as financial relief by a charity.
