Treatment Plants

Council operates sewage treatment plants at Aberdeen, Merriwa, Murrurundi and Scone.

Aberdeen Sewerage Scheme

Sewage collection and transfer

The main population areas of Aberdeen are served by the Aberdeen Sewerage Scheme originally constructed around 1986. Properties connected to the Aberdeen Sewerage Scheme drain into one of three SPS catchments and one gravity catchment. Sewage is gravitated from the gravity catchment into to Aberdeen STP.

STP Description

Aberdeen STP, build in 1986, is a 4,000 EP capacity plant. The STP consists of two IDEA (Intermittently Decanted Extended Aeration) reactors which treat sewage via an activated sludge process.

Merriwa Sewerage Scheme

Sewage collection and transfer

The urban areas of Merriwa are served by the Merriwa Sewerage Scheme, originally constructed in 1970. Dwellings connected to the Merriwa Sewerage Scheme drain into one of three catchments, with catchment two and catchment three gravitating towards the Merriwa STP.

STP Description

Merriwa STP is a 1,140 EP capacity trickling filter system. Raw sewage from Merriwa Township discharges into the plant’s inlet works via a gravity main and rising main from Dutton Street sewage pumping station (SPS).

Murrurundi Sewerage Scheme

Sewage collection and transfer

The populated areas of Murrurundi are served by the Murrurundi Sewerage Scheme originally constructed in 1979. Properties connected to the Murrurundi Sewerage Scheme drain into one of two SPS catchments and one gravity catchment. Both SPS1 and SPS2 direct the sewage to catchment three which gravitates to the STP for treatment before discharge.

STP Description

Murrurundi STP is a 1,000 EP capacity plant comprised of a Pasveer Channel which is essentially an extended aeration process.

Scone Sewerage Scheme

Sewage collection and transfer

The urban areas of Scone are served by the Scone Sewerage Scheme, originally constructed in 1968. Properties connected to the Scone Sewerage Scheme drain into one of seven SPS catchments, divided into four major SPSs and three minor SPSs.

STP Description

Scone STP is a 7,000 EP capacity plant comprised of a trickling filter system and an IDEA system operating in parallel. The trickling filter was built in 1940 and the IDEA process was added in 1983. The treatment provided by the activated sludge process would generally be much better compared to the quality of the effluent produced by the trickling filter process. Both effluent streams are mixed prior to entering the maturation pond system.
