In NSW councils where councillors elect the Mayor, a mayoral election is held every two years, including midway through the four-year Council term.
Upper Hunter Shire Council held its mid-term elections at its Council meeting on Monday, 28 September 2026, electing Cr Pat Ryan as Mayor and Cr Peter McGill as Deputy Mayor.
The elections were conducted by a show of hands.
Council elects new Mayor and Deputy Mayor
Upper Hunter Shire Council has elected Cr Pat Ryan as Mayor and Cr Peter McGill as Deputy Mayor at its mid-term elections during the Council meeting commencing at 5pm on Monday 28 September 2026.
Cr Ryan moves from Deputy Mayor into the mayoral role, with outgoing Mayor Cr Maurice Collison continuing to serve the community as a Councillor.
Council congratulates Cr Ryan and Cr McGill on their appointments and thanks Cr Collison for his leadership and dedication. First elected to Council in 2012 and elected Mayor on 16 June 2020, he has served a long 14 year commitment to the community, including more than six years as Mayor.
