Upper Hunter Shire Council convened an extraordinary meeting on 6 May 2024 to address matters arising from the recent vacancy created by the departure of former Councillor Elizabeth Flaherty. The vacancy resulted from her absence at three consecutive ordinary Council meetings without seeking a leave of absence, as required under section 234 of the Local Government Act.
Dispensation from By-election for Councillor Vacancy
Council has resolved to apply to the Minister for Local Government to dispense with the need for a by-election to fill this vacancy. Given the next ordinary local government election is scheduled for 14 September 2024, and considering the significant costs associated with a by-election, Council believes this request reflects a responsible use of resources.
Committee Member Nominations
The meeting also addressed the need to fill vacancies on several Council committees following Councillor Flaherty's departure. The appointments made during the meeting are as follows:
These appointments ensure that all Council committees continue to operate effectively, maintaining our commitment to thorough and representative governance.
Upper Hunter Shire Council is committed to transparency and accountability in all aspects of its governance.
